Nepal still has a strong need for sustainable energy to satisfy existing and upcoming energy demand. Global21 leads an evaluation and appraisal mission for the Nepal Energy Efficiency Programme aiming at analysing the programme progress and setting-up the design of the upcoming project phase focusing on:

  • Capacity development of grid operators
  • Energy efficiency market places
  • Energy efficiency in educational training
 

15 November 2016:

Grid integration of solar energy and energy efficiency to meet NDC targets in Bangladesh

To meet the fast growing electricity demand in the country, the government of Bangladesh aims at using the country’s solar potential along with grid-connected solar energy predominantly in the rural areas.

Global21 leads an appraisal mission to set up a new project “Energy efficiency and grid integration of solar energy in Bangladesh”. The project supports Bangladesh in implementing its nationally determined contributions (NDC) to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and in fulfilling its commitment under the Paris Agreement.

 

1 September 2016:

Workshop and capacity development for the NAP-process in Armenia

For the ClimaEast project, financed by the EU and carried out by DAI, Global21 assists the Ministry of the Nature Protection (MNP) of Armenia regarding the development of national capacities for the elaboration of the National Adaptation Plan (NAP).

The workshop focusses on the advice regarding the NAP process as part of the NDC of Armenia but also on concertation processes and implementation of the NAP roadmap.

Process consulting for the modernization of municipal services

Josef Seitz leads an expert team for the modernization of municipal services in South-East Europe:

  • Assess tools and services developed by the project, in particular in the field of water supply, waste water, waste and economic development
  • Identify services and tools with potential for marketable products
  • Designing and planning measures for building capacities of partners’ regional networks
 

22 April 2016:

Environmentally sound and socially inclusive treatment of e-waste in Ghana

Inappropriate treatment of e-waste from global and local sources represents a major threat to environment and public health in Ghana. In this context, Global21 leads an appraisal mission to set up a new programme for the “Environmentally sound disposal and recycling of E-waste in Ghana”.

The mission has a strong focus on informal sector and economic inclusion of poor and vulnerable groups. Moreover, potential cooperation interfaces for financial cooperation are identified.

 

3 February 2016:

Consultancy on economic value of ecosystems and ecosystem services

The lack of understanding amongst decision-makers and local stakeholders for the economic value of biodiversity in the Western Balkans leads to increasing threats for the exceptional rich biodiversity hotspots in South-East Europe.

Josef Seitz therefore advises the Open Regional Fund South-East Europe - Biodiversity on the conception, planification and preparation of a project proposal to raise the awareness regarding economic value of ecosystems and ecosystem services in the in South-East Europe.

 

30 November 2015:

Assessment of the biodiversity policy in the Western Balkans

On behalf of the Open Regional Funds Biodiversity, Global21 carries out an assessment of the biodiversity policy in the Western Balkans. The study includes:

  • Assessment of existing national and regional biodiversity policy framework and institutional setting in 6 Western Balkan countries
  • Recommendations for regional cooperation models to implement EU Biodiversity Strategy 2020
  • Proposals for priority activities to strengthen national and regional capacities

The German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) is currently reorienting its strategic approach for regional cooperation in South-East Europe. Global21 advises the ministry regarding:

  • Reorientation of the regional portfolio in the fields of environment and climate change
  • Potential of cooperation between financial and technical cooperation
  • Potential of cooperation with EU projects and initiatives
  • Capacities of regional stakeholders
  • Drafting the strategy document for the environment and climate change sectors

Mitigation options and low-carbon development for the industrial sector in Kenya.

After the elaboration of its Green Economy Strategy, Kenya faces the challenge of implementing and operationalizing green economy approaches at subnational level.

Global21 carries out a study on mitigation options and low-carbon development for the industrial sector in Kenya focusing on:

  • emission efficiency
  • energy efficiency
  • material efficiency

Biodiversity in South East Europe

South-East European countries are currently in a EU pre-access phase and face the challenge to implement EU-Biodiversity-Strategy 2020.

Global21 leads an appraisal mission and conception of a new GIZ project “Open Regional Funds for South-East Europe - Biodiversity“, which assists Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Macedonia, Montenegro and Serbia in regional cooperation approaches for maintaining ecosystems and ecosystem services.

Private sector and climate change in the South Caucasus region - Potentials and challenges

What are the needs of the private sector in South-Caucasus countries (Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia) regarding adaptation to climate change?

Global21 carries out a study identifying opportunities for innovation through adaptation in selected sectors and value chains (in particular tourism and agroindustry). This includes analysing business development framework conditions regarding mainstreaming of climate risks and risk management.

Mainstreaming adaptation to climate change into planning and legal processes

On behalf of GIZ, Global21 assists the Government of Burundi during 6 months in integrating climate change adaptation:

  • Analysing sectoral and cross-sectoral strategies, plans, budget and action plans;
  • Analysing national policy and budgeting processes
  • Identifying key stakeholders and assessing their competencies
  • Developing and applying a country-specific Climate-Proofing methodology
  • Analysing the finance system and developing an innovative approach for climate finance

Green Climate Fund Readiness in Zambia

On behalf of the „Climate Finance Readiness Programme“, Global21 accompanies the Zambian government in developing methodological and institutional capacities to integrate climate change into planning processes and prepare the country for the Green Climate Fund. The 9-month mission includes several phases:

  • Development of a country-specific methodology for integrating climate change into the budget planning
  • Climate-Proofing-Training for budget and planning experts
  • Pilot application of the methodology
  • Integration of the methodology into budget and planning processes

German-Algerian cooperation focuses on environment sector

In the future, German-Algerian cooperation will focus on Algerian priorities in the environment sector.

Global21 leads an evaluation mission to prepare and design the future focus "environment", composed of three projects:

  1. Environmental governance and biodiversity
  2. Resource management, resource efficiency and climate change
  3. Waste management and circular economy

Roadmap for economic cooperation with Tunisia

Starting in Tunisia, the Arab Spring caused a wave of political, social and economic changes all over the Arab world. 

Global21 develops of a roadmap for economic cooperation with Tunisia by analysing the context, obstacles and potentialities for the cooperation between public and private sector in Tunisia. The study covers the areas water resource management and sustainable economic development, focussing in particular on employment promotion and disadvantaged regions.

19 March 2013:

Study on e-waste in the MENA region

In developing and transition countries, e-waste is frequently not being treated in an environmentally safe manner leading subsequently to heavy impacts on human health and environment. On the other hand, e-waste offers economically most interesting recycling possibilities that are unfortunately not being used.

Focusing mainly on waste from information and communication technologies (ICT), Global21 carries out a study comparing the legal situation, treatment technologies and initiatives regarding e-waste in 10 countries of the MENA region. Furthermore, Global 21 frames up a regional benchmarking and suggests a list of recommandations.

 

12 February 2013:

Paris Declaration and Climate Change in Cameroon

The government of Cameroon aims at integrating climate change aspects into the national strategic planning documents, implementing by this the Paris Declaration and taking into account climate change related risks and challenges.

Commissioned by GIZ, Josef Seitz accompagnies the government of Cameroon in this process by developing a methodology for integrating climate change into national planning documents.

 

24 January 2013:

Strategy development in Morocco

The Moroccan Ministry for Environment wants to place its environment laboratory into the country's environmental policy landscape.

The German Institute for Metrology (PTB) commissioned Global21 to accompany the Moroccan partners in the participative development of a strategy for the National Environment Laboratory.

 

15 October 2012:

Green Economy Workshop in Morocco

The economic transformation towards a "Green Economy" is a major objective of Morocco.

Global21 prepares, organizes and facilitates a Green Economy Workshop at the moroccan Ministry for Energy, Mining, Water and Environment. The mission, carried out jointly with UNEP and financed by GIZ, aims at introducing a macroeconomic model and its integration into the country's planning tools.

 

3 August 2012:

Workshop on Climate Change and Adaptation in Cameroon

Global21 organizes and carries out a participative workshop in order to sensibilize institutions of Cameroon on the challenge of climate change. The GIZ financed event includes a training on the „Climate Proofing“ tool (integration of climate change into programmes and strategies) and a strategic planning workshop.

What does the cooperation between the public and the private sector in Algeria look like? Josef Seitz carries out a Partnership Landscape Analysis (PLA) with the aim to:

  • analyse context, barriers and potentialities of cooperation between the public and the private sector in Algeria;

The German Institute for Metrology (PTB) carries out a quality infrastructure project aiming at enhancing capacities of moroccan environmental laboratories. Josef Seitz, director of Global21, leads a project evaluation mission and participates in a project planification workshop.

As a contribution to the discussion on this issue, Josef Seitz, director of Global21, presents in GIZ Headquarters in Germany the results of his missions to Kenya and South Africa that focused on Poverty Impact Assessments in Green Economy projects.

 

15 November 2011:

Training on Climate Proofing, Climate Finance and moderation of adaptation workshop

For analysing and identifying risks and opportunities of climate change in strategies, programmes and plans, GIZ has developed the tool „Climate Proofing for Development“ (CP4Dev). The Climate Proofing training is based on a participative Harvard method.

Furthermore, international discussion on climate change has led to the setting up of a multitude of climate finance instruments.

During a Climate Change workshop, organized in Mali, Global21 carries out trainings on Climate Proofing and Climate Finance and leads the workshop as moderator.

 

7 October 2011:

Green Economy and Poverty Impact Assessment in projects in Kenya and South-Africa

GIZ is participating in development partnerships with the private sector in Kenya and South-Africa. In order to measure the impact of the partnership activities with respect to poverty reduction, Global21 carries out Poverty Impact Assessments in the corresponding projects. The results will also be used for developing guidelines for Green Economy projects.

 

5 September 2011:

Supervision of an Environmental and Social Impact Assessment in Gabon

Private oil companies operate since decades in Gabon, an ecologically highly sensitive country. In order to connect the isolated town and oil extracting site Gamba to the national road system, the company Shell finances the construction of a road. Passing between a National Park and the coastal line, the road will have an environmental impact on the rich biodiversity, but also foster local development in the region.

Global21 is in charge of supervising the environmental and social impact assessment and advises on development options for this sensitive area.

Fact-finding mission to Cuba

International cooperation with Cuba is still restricted to some exemplary projects and initiatives. Recent developments such as the resumption of official bilateral cooperation between Cuba and France in December 2010, show however an intensification of international relations.

In this context, Josef Seitz carries out a fact-finding mission in order to get a clearer idea about the country’s needs in environmental consulting and possibilities of cooperation with Cuba.

Elaboration of a proposal for EuropeAid Environment Project

EuropeAid supports the international centre for environmental technologies in Tunis (CITET) in developing institutional and technical capacities for environmental technologies. In the context of a tender referring to environmental management systems, eco-label, REACH, treatment of industrial wastewater and sustainable tourism, Global21 elaborates for the German GIZ a proposal for the implementation of the project.

ADEME charges Global21 with promoting French
environmental technologies

During the past decades environmental technologies and the relating know-how have been considerably developed in France, but are not sufficiently known at international level. Therefore, the French Agency for Environment and Energy (ADEME) wants to elaborate sector specific promotion brochures presenting internationally the environmental technology offer of French companies and public institutions.

Global21 has been charged, together with its partner for communication and marketing Axel-client.com, with the creation of these prestigious documents.

Training cycle on risk management

REME-GTZ project has started a training cycle on risk management for Maghrebian consulting companies and consultants.

Carried out by INERIS France and accompanied by Global21, the training focuses mainly on the following topics:

  • industrial and professional risk evaluation
  • risk study
  • risk management and ISO 31000
 

8 February 2010:

Evaluation of Environment Programme in Tunisia

Implemented jointly by the Tunisian Ministry for Environment and German Technical Cooperation GTZ, the German Tunisian Environment Programme will enter into its third phase. In order to evaluate its state of progress and adjust conception and objectives, the programme carries out a project progress review.

Josef Seitz is charged to evaluate the programme's activities regarding technological cooperation and waste management.

 

19 November 2009:

Regional meeting on ISO 26000 and CSR

The practical experiences of companies in introducing CSR and the new ISO 26000 standard - to be published in 2010 – are the main topics of a regional meeting organized by AFNOR in Toulouse.

Global21 is currently extending its consulting activities in France and participates as local consulting company in the event.
 

 

15 October 2009:

REACH training in Morocco

The European REACH regulation and its requirements and procedures are still of great interest for many non European companies. Sectoral technical centers in Morocco are in charge of advising the companies but dispose of only few capacities regarding the REACH regulation.

In cooperation with INERIS Global21 organizes for the REME-GTZ project a REACH training course for the Moroccan technical centers.

Analyzing REACH compliance in companies

What exactly is my company’s status regarding REACH? Is my company REACH compliant? What requirements do I have to respect? What are the next steps to follow?

For clarifying these issues, Global21 in cooperation with INERIS carries out REACH compliance analysis in companies of the textile, leather and chemical industries.

 

29 July 2009:

Climate Change Workshop in Tanzania

Global21’s study on the economic impact of climate change in the East African Community was submitted to all stakeholders in the region. In a participative workshop, the stakeholders presented their comments on the study and defined policy options for a regional approach regarding climate change.

Josef Seitz intervenes as key expert and moderator for the different working groups.

Training for Maghrebian REACH Helpdesks

Morocco, Tunisia and partially also Algeria are actually setting up national helpdesks on the European regulation REACH. For the REME-GTZ project and in cooperation with INERIS France, Global21 organizes a training course for the Maghrebian REACH helpdesks.

Global21 wins two year contract

REME-GTZ project has published a tender for the coaching of its chemical industry component over the next two years.

Global21 submits its offer, wins the contract and prevails over the other competing consulting companies.

 

7 April 2009:

Partnership Charta and joint position paper

During their annual meeting, the Maghrebian chemical industry associations elaborate the draft for a partnership charta committing themselves to promote free trade between the Maghrebian countries by integrating at the same time the principles of sustainable development into their enterprises.

Furthermore, they sign a draft for a common position paper, directed at the Maghrebian Employer’s Union (UME - Union Maghrébine des Employeurs) proposing to take this precursor initiative as example for the Maghreb region. Josef Seitz intervenes as facilitator for the whole process.

 

18 February 2009:

Strategic consulting for the chemical industry and REACH Helpdesks Maghreb

Between February and April 2009, Global21 participates in the planning and preparation of the REME-GTZ project activities for the Maghrebian chemical industry sector.

The tasks include:

  • coordination of the project activities for the Maghrebian REACH helpdesks,
  • elaboration of the terms of reference for training sessions and workshops.


Furthermore, Global21 accompanies the chemical industry associations of the region in elaborating a position paper regarding the Maghrebian Employer’s Union (UME - Union Maghrébine des Employeurs) and assumes the preparation, realization and moderation of the sector’s planning workshop
